Fourth of July

I’m working more in the studio lately and I’m playing with memory and invented ideas and working on some pieces that aren’t done from direct observation. This is an idea I’ve had in my sketchbook for years. It’s only existed as a tiny ballpoint pen sketch. I felt like I needed to paint it to see if it would work.

We typically visit my parents’ house on the Fourth of July. Their birdhouses and lightning bugs are an annual image for me. As an adult I’ve fledged but return every year so I’m not sure if the birdhouses are my parents or my wife and I, but the five lightning bugs are my kids.

I may paint this one again sometime.
