At figure group today I wanted to stick to contour drawing rather than my usual method of feeling out shapes of tone. Many watercolor painters do a contour drawing and then fill in the color. I wanted to try it. Here are my warm up drawings and the first painting I did where I drew a contour and then filled it in. I didn’t dislike it, and it seemed a bit “easier” than my usual approach of just charging in and finding things as I go. The directness of it appeals to me and contour drawings are fun, but I’m not sure that I’m in love with the process yet.

So then I did a short one working how I normally would’ve approached it. Part of me missed that in the prior one the drawing had already been established, but with this method I think there’s more a sense of the form created as I search around for the drawing.
